Fun and Friendly DIY SEO with MarketGoo: An Enthusiastic Review

I don’t know you, but for me, school used to be dreadfully boring at times.

With pictureless notes to study and even more boring exercise books, studying was a pretty yawn-ish task.

To this creative mind, I much preferred getting hands-on. Like making DIY slime—or goo!—in art class.

For some of us, when your hands-on, you learn quickly, get fewer headaches and get awesome grades!

With content marketing and SEO, we face the same yawn-ish boring learning curve. Technical stuff can be fun, but it can also get repetitive and exhaustive.

However, there’s a do-it-yourself SEO and marketing tool out there I found to be just as fun as making slime—MarketGoo!

Drawing on the need for entertaining images and easy processes that make everything look less stressful to the end user, MarketGoo appears (and is!) as simple and fun and friendly as a colorfully-illustrated exercise book.

MarketGoo provides SEO tools to webmasters and content marketers who want to manage their SEO and grow website traffic professionally and reliably.

As a content marketing team, you may want to keep your SEO plans in-house, so a solution like MarketGoo allows you to do things yourself.

MarketGoo’s Free and Awesome SEO Report

Rather than subscribing for a paid plan right away, you can choose to start by getting a free SEO report from MarketGoo.


Clicking the “Start by getting your free SEO Report now!” button on MarketGoo’s homepage. This takes you to the nice form you can see in the screenshot above, asking you to input your website’s URL, your email address and your country.

That’s all you have to do!

Next, click “Get your report now. It’s free!” to grab your free report.

You’ll find an SEO analysis page that tests your website and returns a complete report (downloadable as a PDF) inclusive of a thorough basic analysis.

Next to each section, you’ll see a button inviting you to sign up for a free 10-day trial to test the full version of MarketGoo.

MarketGoo assigned a “solid” 57% rating to my Woohoo!

The areas the free report covers are:

  • Visitors: Provides a traffic estimate and search terms Google users can find your site with
  • Site Review: Tells you whether your site loads quickly and if you have on SSL/HTTPS. It also tells you a few details you should fix (four broken links in my case) and what you’ve done well so far
  • Search Optimization: Offers plenty of directions of things to fix, including title tags, meta descriptions, images, URL length, robots.txt and so on
  • Content: Checks whether you have a blog or not, if you have a contact form on site (ugh! More on that one later) and whether there’s enough content
  • Mobile: How does your website display on desktop, tablet and mobile? The report shows you simulated screens to verify views and, if a mobile version is enabled for your website, how fast it loads
  • Popularity: Basically, how many backlinks do you have and which sites link to you?
  • Social: Displays social likes and share counts for Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+

MarketGoo works with a simplified pricing model, where you can either:

  • Simply get the free SEO report, or
  • Pay the $29.97 (or $20 if you choose annual billing) per month plan


Nothing else.

That simplifies the choice for a prospective user, because you only get the option to pay or not pay.

There’s no third route.

So here’s the thing: After you’ve downloaded your free report—or clicked the “Start your 10-Day Free Trial!” button from the Pricing page—you can sign up right away.

This is the screen that will welcome you:


Enter your name, email address and a chosen password.

Then click “Next” where it asks for your website address and country:


Click “Next” again.

Before you can use your trial account, MarketGoo will prompt a form to input your credit card.

Since the monthly version costs $29.97/mo and I could get a 20% off with an annual version ($24/mo), I opted for the latter.

MarketGoo then asks you to select your SEO target country to optimize suggestions and tips.

This is critical, because all the advice MarketGoo provides is based on your main target country for your SEO efforts.

Then, on the next screen, you have the option to enter the email of the Website Manager, that is the person who takes care of your website’s technical and optimization aspects. (Myself, in this case, so the site manager email is my own.)

This email will enable you (or your site manager) to send support emails to ask for help.

When your account is ready, go to Settings → Manage Project to add more details about your website.

The project (website) configuration comprises your country, the name of business or brand, whether your business is local or not and if you’re in charge of your own site or rely on a webmaster or agency.

MarketGoo needs all of this information to customize the guidance it gives you through the after-scan optimization tasks.

Configuring Keywords and Competitors

The SEO fun begins here!

Under Settings → Manage Keywords, you can add up to 20 keywords for your website that you want to monitor.

Start with the search function (Find Your Keywords) and view the results after hitting the “Search” button.

MarketGoo will return a list of keyword suggestions with their search volume on the basis of the core keyword (“tag”) that you entered in the search field.

You can add each of these results to Your Keywords by clicking the round “+” button beside each keyword.


After this part’s completion, click the tab Keywords we have found for you right after Find Your Keywords.

This one retrieves keywords you already rank for in Google and that users actually search.

(An easy SEO shortcut, isn’t it?)

Let’s proceed with the analysis of your competition.

Under Settings → Manage Competitors, add up to four competitors.

In the example below, I added and as competitors for my website:


Another option is to add any of the “Suggested Competitors” that MarketGoo found to have at least one common keyword with your domain name.

Honestly, I found nothing worthy of my time on this list. But you could find more luck!

SEO Tasks

Under Your Plan → Tasks you’ll find all of MarketGoo’s step-by-step advice to improve your site health for search engines and users.

This area is organized in clickable illustrated boxes with the most common SEO issues.

Clicking each box opens a dialog to explain the issue in detail and how you can fix it.

You can view a screenshot of how Tasks appear under the “Site Review” paragraph in the analytics section below.

Page Optimization

Under Your Plan → Optimize Your Pages MarketGoo suggests page-specific keyword optimization.

This is how it works:

  • MarketGoo shows you a list of pages it deems in need of better SEO
  • For each page, it asks you to input a keyword to optimize it for
  • MarketGoo shows a progress bar, indicating how optimized your page is, and tell you which Tasks are still to perform to boost rankings

Now, Let’s Get on with MarketGoo’s Analytics (aka “Your Report”)

Under Your Report on the left sidebar, you’ll find the following cool sections:

  • Start
  • Insights
  • Site Review
  • On-Page Optimization
  • Mobile
  • Popularity
  • Social Media

Let’s get to the nuts and bolts of each.



This is your overview (shown in the screenshot above).

The Start section gives you an overall health score for your website, along with a comment.

For example, my website scored an overall 40% and MarketGoo comments “Solid, you have the basic elements covered.”

On the right side of the screen, MarketGoo displays a graph showing score progress: If my website had improved and passed from a 40% original score to a 70% over two weeks, I would see here an ascending graph.



In Insights, MarketGoo checks your indexing status on the three main search engines worldwide: Google, Bing and Yahoo! (mine is ranking, yay!).

Then the tool provides an estimate of your overall traffic, based on proprietary indicators as well as Alexa’s ranking (mine’s fallen beyond the million and isn’t ranking anymore—ugh! It might have be deemed inactive since I haven’t updated in a long time.)

If you connect Google Analytics to MarketGoo, this is where you bring in better traffic analysis and estimates. (Side Note: I don’t use Google Analytics anymore; it’s a complicated tool to handle for a solo business owner post-GDPR, so I couldn’t add it here.)

Now, the keyword rankings table is where it gets interesting. Here you can see how your website ranks for all keywords added to MarketGoo across three search engines and how much the ranking fluctuated over a period of time (past fifteen days or three months—you choose the graph display!).

There’s also a preview of how your site appears when searched on each search engine.

The last table, which compares your rankings to those of your competitors for the same keywords, is where you get a glimpse of how your site fares.

Site Review


MarketGoo’s Site Review scans your website under three aspects: Performance, Health and Security.

Performance counts the pages on your site, calculates your site’s load speed time and your homepage file size.

Health is all about errors: 404, 500, whether you have a robots.txt file and an XML sitemap or not, and if your site serves content from the same domain.

Security checks if you have a valid SSL certificate installed.

Now it gets interesting.

Clicking the “Fix these issues” button will take you to that Tasks page where you can find guidance in getting reported issues fixed.

This is what I see under Tasks:


“Fix broken or dead links” is what I’m looking for.

Clicking the image gives me this dialog:


This is a comprehensive guide on how and why you should fix these errors!

Under “What have we found?” and “What should you do?” you get the exact location and nature of the problem as well as the solution.

Instead, “Why is this important?” explains the reasons why this issue is important and how it impacts the overall experience of your website (broken links, user experience and search engine indexation).

So when you click that “Show pages with 404 errors” button, MarketGoo will open the window you see below, displaying a list of pages with broken links and what links you should fix:


After you fix the errors, click the “Done! Check it now” button on the bottom right of the Task window.

If you can’t do that yourself, you can hit “Send instructions to my webmaster” to get a report emailed to the person (Website Manager) whose email you entered at setup stage.

On-Page Optimization


This section reports the on-page SEO issues your site might have.

Mine definitely have some!

A couple of page title issues, three meta description problems, one link isn’t right (probably broken) and… MarketGoo found no contact forms on the website, so it deems it incomplete.

Clicking “Fix these issues” takes you to Tasks, which explain what the issues are in further detail (and what to do to make your website perfectly functional on-page).



Mobile shows you how your site looks on a smartphone and a tablet (with simulated pictures). It also reports how long your page takes to load on mobile and the size of the mobile page.

My site isn’t doing well on mobile—it looks like it’s going to take some work!



This section is the backlink report you’re looking for on MarketGoo.

It starts with what the tool found for you: In my case, 184 total backlinks coming from 84 domains.

However, those numbers look a little off to me. In fact, Monitor Backlinks shows 1.9k backlinks for from 202 domains.

I suppose MarketGoo uses powerful filters to count incoming backlink data.

Anyway, my website is not doing too bad—slow at acquiring backlinks but still making it. (Most of my backlinks are from guest posts and content marketing, and content takes time to produce.)

Social Media


Finally, we come to social media!

MarketGoo counts and displays the overall number of Facebook Likes and Shares your site scored, as well as LinkedIn and Google+ Likes.

Then you have a pretty graph, showing how many social signals your website received over a given period (15 days or 3 months).

After the graph, a table shows how your social signals compare against your competitors.

Thoughts After Analyzing My Business Website with MarketGoo (And Implementing Tips)

It was fun to use MarketGoo to improve

The usual stress of learning to use a new tool was absent here.

The whole experience felt like having a personal coach who worked side by side with you, guiding you through and solving the hardest issues to find a solution together.

Pretty much the DIY SEO of my dreams!

However, I have to add a note about MarketGoo’s insistence (other auditing tools are guilty of this little bias, too) on having contact forms on the website:


But… as long as there’s an email address, business works!

Look at my Contacts page: It already lists my emails and phone contacts!

Where’s the real issue? Users can still copy that email into their email client and shoot me a message.

There’s also the additional problem with the EU’s GDPR related to contact forms that store sender data and IP address in the database. That’s a lot of responsibility that I, as a solo business owner, cannot and don’t want to hold.

Plenty to consider before adding a contact form to a website!

A clear-text email address can just do.

2 Aspects MarketGoo Could Do Better

Okay, it’s not only contact forms.

There two other little quirks I found could use some improvement.

Where’s My Twitter?

Look at that Social Media section of the Report.

Something is definitely missing.

Can you see it?

It’s Twitter!

The list of social media accounts MarketGoo checks for signals doesn’t include it.

Even though Twitter is a pretty good tool when it comes to marketing! (It’s used by marketers, companies and organizations worldwide—and that includes Google!)

So adding Twitter to the Social Media area would be a great idea in my opinion.

Reported Issues Are Not Highlighted Among the Tasks

Another problem I found is with the way reported issues are displayed.

When I click “Fix these issues,” I would like to see the reported issues highlighted, not thrown together in the mix with the suggestions.

Some sort of labeling would definitely help with prioritization and to avoid confusion—the higher the number of issues to fix, the harder it is to recognize what’s an urgent fix and what’s just a nice-to-do optimization!


Overall I enjoyed working with MarketGoo and would definitely recommend it to small content marketing teams and their webmaster.

If you’re mainly interested in SEO metrics, keyword rank tracking and backlink monitoring, you’re better off with a dedicated SEO tool like Monitor Backlinks. If things like site crawl and page analysis are priorities though, MarketGood might be the right tool. Take both for a free trial and compare them to see which features are necessary for you.

Do-it-yourself SEO is the best kind of SEO when you can rely on tools that make it easy and seamless to optimize your website without having to hire a specialist to do the work.

You can handle it in-house.

And MarketGoo is precisely that type of tool.
