WooRank Review: Cramming All Your Marketing Data into One Impressive Tool

Think back to being a student, cramming to make it through a midterm.

Chapters over chapters, professor handouts still to read, practice quizzes to do, essays to write—so much to get done in so little time!

That would have definitely been a lot easier if you could count on good lecture outlines and textbook chapter summaries, wouldn’t it?

A way to speed up all that cramming, handing you all the necessary information in one neat package—that’s what you’d need.

Now, as a content marketer working with strict deadlines (oh, trust me—that’s still cramming for grown-ups), you’re thinking the same thing again.

You need to have a resource to speed things up at a click’s reach.

What you’re looking for is WooRank, a tool for content marketers to quickly audit a website and fix or improve all that needs to be fixed or improved.

WooRank Review: Cramming All Your Marketing Data into One Impressive Tool

woorank-review

WooRank was born to be the easiest-to-use, fastest and most comprehensive site audit and digital marketing tool available on the web.

It’s such a huge tool—analysis and hands-on advice can go very in-depth, but the nice thing is that WooRank doesn’t make “huge” equal “eats up a lot of time.”

You can definitely use WooRank in “cramming mode!”

(I do.)

The standard WooRank audit feature—Website Reviewis available for free to any unregistered user. This tool generates a comprehensive audit touching upon the SEO, usability and technology areas.

When you upgrade, you’ll get essential extra features in addition to Website Review, including:

  • Keyword Tool
  • Site Crawl
  • (Advanced) Settings

Let’s start with the basics and review each feature first.

Website Review: How to Run a Site Audit with WooRank

As easy as counting 1-2-3, all you need to do is load up the WooRank website and type your URL in the provided field, hit “Review” and voilà—there’s a site audit ready for you.

Oh, here’s where the fun begins.

WooRank highlights every little hiccup in your website’s overall SEO and marketing health, so after you hit the “Review” button there are a few (more than “a few” actually) things to look at.

woorank-review

1. Make Sense of the Scores and Fixable Areas

WooRank provides eight audit areas for your website, organized into three major categories:

  • Optimize (SEO, Mobile, Usability, Technologies)
  • Promote (Backlinks, Social, Local)
  • Measure (Visitors)

For each audit section, you can click on analyzed issues to get how-to advice and tips on how to solve the problem.

Now let’s see in detail what each of these areas has to offer to content marketers.

SEO

All the basics here:

  • Title Tag, Meta Description, H headings. It’s interesting how the tool lets you know if you have more than one H1 title on the page (a mistake I seem to be repeating with my page formatting) and exactly which H1 tags they are (their text).
  • This section also gives you a Google Preview to see how your website will display in the SERPs with its current title, URL and description.
  • For keywords, in addition to a Keyword Cloud box, the tool also provides a Keyword Consistency analysis including frequency and presence in the title, description and H tags.
  • The Alt Attribute for images is analyzed and reported both in terms of quantity (“We found X images on this website” and “X alt attributes are empty or missing”) and quality (the tool gives you the URLs of the images that are missing the alt attribute).

Then we come down to pages and internal/external linking.

  • The tool lets you know the number of Discovered Pages via your sitemap, how many links are on the page (In-Page Links) and if there are any Broken Links.
  • For In-Page Links, WooRank shows a graph of how links are distributed (nofollow vs. follow, external vs. internal) and a table of the link attributes: Anchor, Type, Follow (or nofollow). I found this helpful to review homepage links at a glance!

On with some features of a more technical nature:

  • WWW Resolve (does your site use the WWW version or not?)
  • Robots.txt and XML Sitemap (are they present?)
  • URL Parameters (are your URLs clean or do they use parameters?)
  • Underscores in the URLs (er… don’t use ’em)
  • Blocking Factors (does your site use Flash and frames?)
  • Domain Registration (how long ago your domain was registered, and how soon it’s going to expire)

As the last two factors analyzed, WooRank tells you if your website has a blog (and it recommends that you have one) and a list of Related Websites that may be your competitors—or are worth giving a look anyway.

Mobile

A graph of your monthly Mobile Visits gathered from your Google Analytics account (that you can integrate with WooRank, as we’ll see later) is the first thing WooRank shows you in this audit area.

It answers the question: “Do I really need mobile optimization? Do users land on my pages via mobile devices?” (if your graph is alive here, the answer is obviously “yes”).

Then WooRank reports your site’s Mobile Friendliness and Mobile Rendering, with a preview of how your site appears on a phone and a tablet.

From here on, the Mobile area goes technical enough to be the realm of your web developer. From Mobile Compatibility to Mobile Viewport and Mobile Speed, this is what your developer should look into if the audit reports errors and missing enhancements (e.g. compression) that need immediate care.

Usability

This area of the audit speaks to you and your developer, so let’s see what it tells you first.

  • URL: How many characters does it have? Domains better be short, sweet and memorable.
  • Favicon: Does your site have one? Great! It adds a little face to it.
  • Custom 404 Page: You can use a WordPress plugin or easily install one.
  • Email Privacy: It better be an image rather than a real piece of text, because you know spammers.
  • Domain Availability: Registering different extensions can be a good countermeasure against the not-nice cybersquatters.
  • Typo Availability: Um, I’d have no use for luanas0inetti.com, but you know, some typo domains might be helpful against domain thieves.

For your developer, all the pieces of asset optimization and structured data analysis are also available: Asset Minification, Asset Compression, Asset Cacheability, Language (declared) and Structured Data Markup.

Technologies

This is a list of the technologies your website uses:

  • Server Uptime (monitored by WooRank) and Server IP
  • Technologies (Apache, jQuery, etc.)
  • Analytics (the analytics software you’ve installed, such as Google Analytics)
  • Doctype (HTML5, etc.)
  • Encoding of your HTML document (usually utf8)
  • SSL Secure (does your site use HTTPS, and is that well configured?)

But here you also get some Speed Tips that you may want to pass over to your web developer.

This part tells you whether you’re using nested tables, inline styles and if there are too many JavaScript and CSS files linked to your website.

Backlinks

Here’s the juicy part!

  • WooRank’s Backlink Score is calculated on the basis of a combination of link signals (number of backlinks, number of linking domains, quality of backlinks)
  • Referring Domains (how many domains are linking to your website?)
  • Quality. This is interesting: WooRank lists all your top backlinks for your domain and assigns a score to them. It displays all data in a table, showing whether the backlink is nofollowed, the source page (linking page), the target of the backlink (e.g. your homepage), the anchor text and quality of the backlink
  • Traffic from Backlinks (which websites are driving the most traffic to yours? WooRank updates this section weekly)

Social

Here you get an overview of Social Media Engagement (shares) across the most used social platforms (Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Pinterest and StumbleUpon), and graphs of Facebook engagement (Views, Activity, Demographics) from your Page (you can link it to WooRank from the Settings tab on your audit page, but more on this later in the post).

WooRank can discover your Facebook, Twitter and Google+ accounts for your website if you’ve linked to it from each of them.

Local

If you’ve added your website to local directories such as Foursquare and Yelp, data from these pages will be displayed here.

Visitors

This is where WooRank gives you Traffic Estimations (even compared with competitors that you’ve added under the Settings tab—more on that later, too) and data mined from your analytics account, such as Sessions, Behaviors, Pageviews, Source (of traffic), Source Domains, Countries and (Alexa) Traffic Rank.

Also, if you use AdWords, it displays AdWords Traffic (data from SEMrush).

2. The Marketing Checklist: The Tool’s Built-in How-to Guide

WooRank’s Marketing Checklist is something huge!

That alone can go on and on for more than five scrolls and…

Oh, wait! I’m running ahead. There’s just so much to mention here.

Let’s proceed with order.

Marketing Checklist is a special WooRank feature that displays in-depth actionable marketing tips to help you get your website on track, and it displays differently on the basis of your site’s overall health.

The lower your overall score, the more tips you’re going to have here (up to 80) that you can check off like you would on a to-do list. The tip shown at the top of the list is labeled your Top Priority.

Below is an example tip from the Checklist for my business website:

woorank-review

Every tip/item gives you some vital information to go about the issue at hand:

  • A High Impact score to understand how much the issue can affect your overall marketing goals (conversions are definitely a 3/3 impact).
  • How hard it is to solve the issue for a Marketer or a Developer (2/3 for conversions).
  • Why it’s important gives you an overview of the reasons you should attend to this issue.
  • Getting it done is the how-to portion of the advice.
  • External resources is a list of links to the WooRank blog and other websites where you can find actionable advice.

To compare and contrast the tips I got for LuanaSpinetti.com and those I had for EileenSon.org, let’s look at both sites’ scores and overall tips:

woorank-review
Example: LuanaSpinetti.com
woorank-review
Example: EileenSon.org

While WooRank gives plenty of tips for both sites, the focus is clearly different:

  • LuanaSpinetti.com is a more serious website (business) compared to EileenSon.org (fictional character blog), so it’s better optimized for search engines and conversions. However, WooRank suggests that I pay more attention to landing pages for better conversion on LuanaSpinetti, and on site speed performance on EileenSon.
  • EileenSon has a lower overall score than LuanaSpinetti and more areas with issues to solve, but WooRank gave me 78 Checklist items instead of the 80 for LuanaSpinetti. I could only guess it’s because the marketing elements are low on that blog compared to my business site.

Given the depth of the Checklist, you can collect as much insight as you need to add to your marketing plan.

3. Download Reports as PDFs or Slides (Premium Feature)

When you sign up for a Premium or Enterprise plan, WooRank allows you to download a white label audit report in the form of a PDF file or slides.

These files are editable so you can add your own brand logo, color and signature, making it easy to distribute to team members and clients.

Keyword Tool: WooRank’s Way to Be a Keyword Tracker

WooRank also offers a keyword rank tracker tool to monitor up to 50 keywords per website (Pro plan).

woorank-review

Keyword tracking on WooRank includes:

  • Keyword search volume
  • SERP position of website for that keyword
  • Comparison with competitor rankings

A very welcome feature to the busy, “cramming” content marketer!

This is one of the WooRank features I love the most, because a website audit can’t be labeled “complete” without keyword ranking, can it?

It’s easy to use:

  • Click the “Add keyword to track” button in the top-right area of the screen to add any keywords you want to rank for
  • Write your keywords in the Add keywords field and click the “Add” button
  • Your keywords will appear in Selected keywords in the highlighted box below the field
  • Click the “Apply” button to add them to the tool

This area also comes with a suggestion feature—the Add suggested keywords box—when you add new keywords, but it didn’t work very well for me. I definitely can’t use suggested terms like “oriented freelance” or “blog posts” for my ranking goals!

(So sorry, WooRank—you have to work harder on this little feature.)

Site Crawl: How WooRank Catches Every Technical Hiccup

As you know, the technical side of a website must be in good health to impress both Google and users, so this area of WooRank’s audit is comprised of four sections:

  • On-Page
  • HTTP Status
  • Indexing
  • Canonical

woorank-review

1. On-Page

This section takes care of your title tag, meta description, H1 tags and body content issues (e.g. thin content).

  • Title Tag Issues: WooRank tells you what the issue is (Too Long, Too Short, Duplicates, Missing), how many characters it uses (and how many pixels it eats up), the full title and the (clickable) page it’s on.
  • Meta Description Issues: You get the issue name (same as Title Tag), characters, description text and URL of the page where the issue is on.
  • H1 Tags: Multiple or missing H1 tags, the H1 tag text and the page where it’s located.
  • Body Content Issues: Type of content (Thin Content, Duplicates, Blank Page), how many words are present on the page, and the page URL.

For example, because of the title settings in my Yoast! SEO plugin on LuanaSpinetti.com, WooRank’s crawling tool reported my titles to be too long. I resolved this issue easily by removing the “Luana Spinetti” or “LuanaSpinetti.com” site title append to the page title.

Due to the nature of a business website, it would’ve been hard to catch this error myself with a manual audit!

2. HTTP Status

Here you’ll find a report for 5xx and 4xx errors, 3xx redirects and HTTP within HTTPS issues (also called “mixed content“).

  • 5xx Errors: Displays 5xx error code (e.g. 503), the link type (internal or external), error page URL and source page URL.
  • 4xx Errors: Error code (e.g. 404) and data as per 5xx Errors.
  • 3xx Redirects: Type of redirect issue (Broken, Loop, Chain, Simple), the error code, error and source page URLs.
  • HTTP within HTTPS: Number of assets, their type (Images, JavaScript, CSS, Miscellaneous) and their URL and source page.

HTTP errors can break a website in Google, so I recommend you look right into this section when you’re trying to improve your rankings.

Read this guide to learn more about HTTP status error codes and how to fix them.

3. Indexing

Includes non-indexable pages, disallowed pages and nofollowed pages.

  • Non-Indexable Pages: these are pages of your site that might have been made non-indexable by meta robots, robots.txt file or noindex header tags. WooRank shows you the URL of the non-indexable page, the linking source of this page (e.g. when you click a link to page B placed on page A), the noindex type (Meta, Nofollow, Header, Robots, Non-canonical) and whether the page is listed on your sitemap or not.
  • Disallowed Pages: URL of these pages, their source and whether they’re on your sitemap.
  • Nofollowed Pages: URL and page source.

DeepCrawl, the crawling engine WooRank uses for analysis, has a very interesting post here on why non-indexable pages still drive organic traffic and how you can fix the issue.

4. Canonical

Canonical tags and broken hreflang issues are all displayed here.

  • Canonical Tags: The type of canonical issue you’re dealing with (Canonical Tag, Conflicting Canonicals, Sitemap Mismatch, Open Graph Mismatch), the URL of the page and its source.
  • Broken Hreflang Issues: It displays the URL where the issue is located and its source.

WooRank’s canonical analysis is how I found out I had completely screwed up some of my organic rankings with a wrong usage of the canonical tag. Eeek! (Fixed it quickly.)

Thankfully my site had no Hreflang issues, but if yours does, Google has tips on how to use it properly.

WooRank Settings

WooRank’s advanced settings are the place where you can manage and integrate:

  • Competitors. WooRank allows you to add up to three top competitors in this section, to compare and contrast keyword positions in the Keyword Tool and several other factors in the Website Review
  • Google Analytics. Combined with Google Analytics, that you can integrate here, WooRank can show you more relevant site data
  • Google Search Console. Here you can integrate your Google Search Console with WooRank for an in-depth analysis of your website, especially for what concerns crawl errors
  • Social Networks. Link WooRank to your Facebook account to collect engagement insights

You also have a section at the bottom for Email Subscriptions: uptime and crawler notifications, and a weekly email digest. I checked all three because getting an overall site health digest in the inbox every week helps me speed up the audit process.

This is an example of what WooRank’s Settings look like:

How Does WooRank Benefit Content Marketers?

All-in-one SEO Audit and Keyword Tracking Tool

Isn’t that awesome?

I mean, we who work in marketing know all too well how distracting it can be to have to juggle four or five tools at once to do all we ought, from a simple technical audit to a full-blown SEO and marketing analysis.

WooRank has it all, including the actionable tips to fix things right away. While its Keyword Tool might not earn a place in the upper ranks of SEO tools like Monitor Backlinks or SerpBook, it definitely helps make the job easier, especially when you work with clients’ websites and not only your own.

Richard Howe from Colour Rich told me he uses WooRank to convert more potential customers into website optimization projects:

Although there are several tools on the market with similar features, the WooRank interface is particularly intuitive and that has been key to our own customer conversion rates.

The clean, single-page overview with colour coordinated sections and graphics allows us to easily demonstrate which areas of a site are lacking.

Being able to clearly define issues and a plan to remedy each flagged-up warning gives the client confidence in our abilities, and has lead to a 75% conversion rate following the initial consultation.

More Marketing Resources Than You Can Use

The tips in the Marketing Checklist don’t stop with the text in the boxes. There are links from the blog to further your research on the topic, and WooRank also makes Videos and text-based SEO Guides available for its users.

I found the Checklist itself, combined with the extra resources, to be more than I can use in a “cramming” session (usually no longer than one week). But if you focus on the Checklist boxes alone, you can do it pretty quickly.

Mind the External Resources, too—they sometimes give you the hands-on tips that only get mentioned in the boxes.

Also, er… WooRank’s Tips box sometimes blows up and returns a function error, so this part of the Checklist isn’t always reliable:

woorank-review

All in all, I think WooRank beats many tools out there for the wealth of knowledge it provides within its audits.

Much of this knowledge is also helpful to your web developer and technical team to fix the most expert-level site errors.

In-depth Analysis of Facebook Social Signals

The social analysis section is one of the WooRank features I loved the most when I first signed up for a free trial (many of the social features aren’t available for free).

While this section is absolutely far from being as exhaustive as more social-specific tools like Sprout Social or BuzzSumo, I found it as in-depth as an all-in-one tool can go.

Specifically:

  • The Social Engagement comparison with my competitors helped me realize how much work I have to put into my social media marketing plan, and how my competitors compare between them as well (tells plenty about who I should look up to).
  • The overall graphs of my Facebook page Views, Activity and Demographics helped me get an at-a-glance look at how my social engagement efforts are working for my posts, including paid ads and boosted posts.
  • The tip boxes provided when you click on each section (e.g. Social Engagement) contain great insights and links to social media management tools I could use if my social signals are dragging.

I mean, you can always take this data and go more in-depth with a social-specific tool, but WooRank alone gives a good overview in my opinion.

Is WooRank Worth the Time (and Money)? A Closer Look at Pricing and Performance

You can sign up for a free 7-day trial to experiment with all the Pro features (one of the plans) before you upgrade to one of the three available packages:

  • Pro ($49.99/mo): For website owners. It comes with unlimited reviews and one Advanced Review (for one website) that includes downloadable PDF or slides reports, up to 50 trackable keywords in the Keyword Tool, Site Crawl tool for up to 2,000 pages, 24/7 website monitoring and daily WooRank support.
  • Premium ($149.99/mo): All Pro features multiplied by five, white label PDF reports, a LeadGen tool and priority support.
  • Enterprise ($249.99/mo): A plan tailored specifically for teams, with everything in Premium and extra Advanced Reviews, unlimited keyword tracking, API access, third-party integration, bulk upload of URLs (for review), marketing insights mined from a database of 15+ million websites and phone support.

woorank-review

I found the seven-day trial worth every minute of my time, and upgrading was a good choice. In less than ten minutes, I got a complete audit of my most important websites that I could put to use right away.

One blog I had recently moved to a subdomain got indexed in less than 24 hours. Another blog has been advancing keyword positions in Google, and finally, my business website got in a better shape than I could ever manage alone. (I get anxious when it comes to my business website, I’m sure you can relate.)

Also, the WooRank website never went down when I needed it the most, so I guess I could say I let out a very welcome breath of relief.

When you sign up, you get a nice site dashboard—the Reviews Overviewto see all your site audits and their scores at a glance, with all the options on the right side of the table row. A very welcome little feature for webmasters and teams managing more websites!

woorank-review

Customer support at WooRank is amazingly generous, I must say. After the free seven-day trial, sadly I had to deactivate my account due to being in a tough financial time, despite how much I loved the tool.

And what did the WooRank team do?

They replied to my feedback showing me a kindness I wouldn’t have expected: They offered to upgrade me for less than half the Pro monthly price!

Now, while I definitely couldn’t afford the full price, I could make it with paying about half of it every month, so I replied back and got the deal.

WooRank got me results fast, so I would recommend it as an audit and marketing tool to any blogger, content marketer and web developer out there.

Albeit a little pricey for Enterprise users, the wealth of data and analytics tools make it worth the money in my opinion.

Concluding Thoughts on WooRank

I like WooRank. No, I love it!

Between client work and other things to do, I must work on my websites at rocket-speed if I want to achieve something with them in the little time that remains.

WooRank demonstrated itself to be a life-saver to me when it comes down to “marketing cramming”—there’s really so much to get done in such a short span!

I know you hear me, so if you and your team also have to face strict deadlines every month, WooRank might make your life a lot easier.

And yeah, earn some extra time to relax with a coffee or read a good novel chapter. We need that, too.
