Are backlinks still the most important ranking factor in Google?

If you were wondering for how long backlinks will continue to be the number one ranking factor in Google, ask no more. In the last video from Google Webmaster Help, Matt Cutts has answered your question.

A webmaster asked if there is any version of Google that excludes backlinks as a ranking factor. Matt responded that there is no such version available to the public, but they have done internal experiments at Google, and “the quality looks much much worse”.

Matt then said that even if backlinks have been abused sometimes, they still are a “really, really big win in terms of quality for search results”.

So, what does this mean to the future of SEO? It means that backlinks are and will remain to be the main ranking factor in Google, at least for the coming years.

Here’s the YouTube video:

Hello Felix,

I do have a small question:

Does number of backlinks from the same domain matter as much as having backlinks from different sites?

For e.g. I just wrote a guest post with a PR 5 site with high relevance (probably the highest) to my blog content and I got three backlinks to different posts/pages in my site.

Should I try and keep writing more for the same site? or should I try and write for different sites? Which will get me better page rank?

First of all you shouldn’t look at PageRank as a metric. Google has stopped updating the PageRank toolbar more than 1 year and a half. They also said they are not going to update it.

To answer your question, you should try to get links from different sites as well. However, make sure you are only doing link building on reputable and authoritative websites. Think quality, not quantity.
